What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.
Editor's Note: The following contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
So, What's in the Case?
Considering what is revealed about his research, the container almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to fortify himself.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale to come.
