UK, UN and EU Condemn a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.
The judicial ruling of media publisher , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Human rights organizations and several nations have called the national security convictions politically motivated.
Widespread Disapproval and Appeals for Liberation
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that the two-decade sentence constitutes a life sentence for the 78-year-old. She characterized the legal case as having political underpinnings under a law aimed at quieting those who speak out against China. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This verdict demonstrates how the imprecise and extensive stipulations of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in contravention of universal rights standards,” said the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “condemns” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his immediate and unconditional release.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered activist publication, was arrested in 2020 the imposition of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities in the wake of months of pro-democracy protests endorsed by his publication.
He was found guilty on counts of colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were based on the disputed legislation.
Family Concerns
Lai’s son, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. The legal team described him the “planet's most prominent political prisoner” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, even as it offered some “respite” that the judicial farce had concluded.
International Ramifications
The sentencing has complicated UK-China relations. The UK's head of government Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping in January. However, any potential progress on obtaining his liberty remains unclear.
Sebastien Lai queried the value of enhanced diplomatic ties between the UK and China, stating it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Authorities' Statements
Conversely, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the ruling demonstrated that “the rule of law is upheld.”
An official representing China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, called Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the trial had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in the nation's domestic matters.
A Defining Moment
Media freedom advocates called Lai as a symbol of declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general stated it was a “somber occasion for those who value a liberty of the press.”
With a near 100% conviction rate for security-related crimes, Lai’s lengthy term is viewed as the toughest yet handed down under the security statute.
