The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
