The Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
