The Derry Prequel Series Releases Episode Two Early on the Streaming Platform

Audiences are thrilled for the horror series the Derry series, already garnering praise and incorporating themes from other Stephen King works. Just one day after launch, the broadcaster announced that the next chapter will premiere ahead of schedule, released fittingly for October 31st.

Early Release Information

Kicking off on the last day of October at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the next part of the Derry prequel will launch on HBO Max, prior to its Sunday HBO premiere. The remaining installments of the eight-episode season will premiere on Sunday nights on the network and streaming service, culminating in the season finale on the 14th of December.

Show Background

Based in the Derry mythology, the new series is inspired by the original story while expanding on the universe brought to life by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the two It films. The original It highlighted adolescents battling unimaginable horrors, so it’s fitting that the prequel follows in those footsteps. However, the first installment of HBO’s Welcome to Derry shows it set out to raise the stakes, offering more frightening moments than the cinematic versions and establishing a brutal tone for the rest of the season.

Setting and Themes

Set in 1962, this show presents a different group of adults and children residing in a seemingly idyllic town concealing a sinister core. Derry operates on a brutal, periodic loop—defined by hostility, discrimination, and otherworldly forces, as a terrifying being resurfaces each 27-year cycle. Although Welcome to Derry might appear like it strays too near to the movies initially, what differentiates the digital program is its dual perspective—narrated via the perspectives of kids and grown-ups concurrently. Children stay especially susceptible to the entity's fear, but grown-ups don't escape facing their individual fears stemming from the town's ingrained prejudice and hidden paranormal elements.

Episode 2 airs on Halloween at 3 a.m. EST.
