The Citizens Three Goals to Nil The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp scores in Manchester City comfortable victory.
Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the previous evening, the home side swept the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 win for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.
Consecutive Defeats for United
This result represented successive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.
The Red Devils' ability to manage league and European football with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they looked tired all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.
Team Changes
The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the bench was questioned.
Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar fitness issues. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from a fitness issue.
Dominant First Half
The trouble started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose dynamic forward line played with and tore United open with a excellent first half performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.
This put the hosts completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this fixture, United had conceded just six in this WSL season but they fell apart in the wake of City’s creative prowess.
Initial Opportunities
The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, using the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.
United had several attacks ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not challenge Yamashita. City, meanwhile, dominated possession, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.
Scoring Spree
They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh header of the campaign.
They extended their lead with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to drive through the midfield from defense, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Casparij collected the pass on the right side before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid turnover in possession saw Hemp given the room to fire a shot home from outside the box.
Final Period
The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Former City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a single shot on goal.
The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any team who finished above them the previous campaign, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and United to place them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
