The Chainsaw Man Film Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Opening Weekend
Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Following the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100 million milestone worldwide, reaching a international earnings of $108 million in its opening frame. This movie outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in movie houses, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with the talented Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Strong Domestic and Worldwide Performance
Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in over $18 million in the U.S. after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday and $4.5M Sunday take. Globally, the MAPPA-produced feature grossed $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million through Sony distribution (over $43 million overseas, $18.2M stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its official box office total.
Comparisons to Previous Successful Anime Films
Anime marketing agency an industry expert noted in prior discussions, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical $18M in the U.S.. The new film's debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks slightly below the earlier film's $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the earnings seen by mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for the studio.
Marketing Efforts Boost Performance
The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to drive their leadership at the animated movie market. The movie's marketing campaign launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the last day of the gathering.
