Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following Denver's historic comeback victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
