Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
