Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
A new initialism surfaced a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.
Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
