Chicago's MLB Team Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Two-Year Contract.
In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract for the power-hitting player.
Deal Structure and Added Benefits
The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on award achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for earning the MVP award.
- $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for finishing between fourth and tenth.
- Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Transfer Payment and Team Legacy
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
