A senior Russian general has been fatally wounded following an detonation in Moscow, according to reports from authorities.
The incident took place on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Authorities indicated that one theory under investigation suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.
Location of the Incident
Personnel have been sent to the scene, which is understood to be in a south district of the capital.
Media coverage suggest the blast occurred in a car park close to a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.
This latest event echoes other high-profile incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a informant earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are never publicly admitted as a matter of policy.
Hostilities has been marked by shadowy operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
